ESIC Benefits and Eligibility: What Employees Get and How to Use It

By CareerCola Editorial Team Published

ESIC (Employees' State Insurance) is a social security scheme that gives covered employees and their families medical care plus cash benefits during sickness, maternity, and disablement or death caused by employment injury. If you're an employee earning up to ₹21,000 a month (₹25,000 for persons with disability) in a covered establishment, you're generally covered. You contribute 0.75% of your wages and your employer contributes 3.25%. Here's what you get, how eligibility works, and how to actually use it.

Who is covered

ESIC now operates under Chapter IV of the Code on Social Security, 2020, which applies to establishments with ten or more persons employed. The government's summary of the labour codes says ESIC coverage now extends across India, is voluntary for establishments with fewer than ten employees, and is mandatory for establishments with even one employee in hazardous processes.

The wage ceiling for coverage is ₹21,000 a month, or ₹25,000 for persons with disability. It was last revised from 1 January 2017. In replies to Lok Sabha questions in July and August 2026, the government said the ceiling had not been changed since then. If your wages go above the ceiling during a contribution period, you usually stay covered until that period ends; check with your HR for your case.

How much is deducted

According to ESIC, from 1 July 2019:

  • Employee contribution: 0.75% of wages.
  • Employer contribution: 3.25% of wages.
  • Employees whose average daily wage is up to ₹176 are exempt from paying their own share; the employer still pays its share.

You'll see the ESIC deduction on your payslip. If it's deducted but you can't find your record, raise it with HR immediately. Our guide on CTC vs in-hand salary explains how such deductions affect take-home pay.

The main benefits

Medical benefit. Treatment for you and your dependent family members through ESI dispensaries, hospitals and tie-up facilities. This is often the most valuable part, especially for families without private insurance.

Sickness benefit. ESIC says that if you're certified sick, you get cash at 70% of wages for up to 91 days in a year, provided contributions were paid for at least 78 days in the relevant contribution period.

Maternity benefit. Cash benefit during maternity leave for insured women, subject to contribution conditions. Our guide on maternity leave rights explains how this fits with employer leave.

Disablement benefit. If you're injured at work or develop an occupational disease, ESIC provides benefits for temporary or permanent disablement.

Dependants' benefit. If an insured person dies due to employment injury, eligible dependants receive a monthly payment.

There are also other benefits such as funeral expenses and unemployment-related schemes, each with its own conditions. Check esic.gov.in for current rules before relying on any one benefit.

How to actually use ESIC

  1. Get your insurance number. Your employer registers you and you get an IP (Insured Person) number. Ask HR for it in your first month.
  2. Download your e-Pehchan card or get it from your employer, and add family members' details.
  3. Know your dispensary. You're linked to a dispensary or clinic near you. Find out which one before you need it.
  4. For illness: visit your ESI dispensary. For sickness benefit, you'll need a medical certificate from the ESI system.
  5. Emergencies: in a genuine emergency, go to the nearest hospital and inform ESIC and your employer quickly. Reimbursement rules apply.

ESIC also has a mobile app and online portal for checking contributions and entitlements.

Common problems

  • Deducted but not deposited: check your contribution history online. If missing, raise it with HR in writing, then with the regional ESIC office.
  • Family not added: update dependants so they can use medical benefits.
  • Job change: your IP number stays the same. Give it to your new employer instead of getting a new one.
  • Salary above the ceiling: you'll move out of ESIC after the contribution period. Check whether your employer offers group health insurance instead; see company health insurance after leaving a job.

ESIC is often ignored until people need it. Spend ten minutes in your first month getting your IP number, your card and your dispensary details; it's worth it.
