How to Talk About Low CGPA, Backlogs, or a Gap in Tech Interviews

By CareerCola Editorial Team Published

HR screens and campus forms still ask about marks. That does not mean your interview has to become a confession session. You need a short, honest frame, then a pivot to proof you can do the work.

I am talking to CSE / AI / related students and early-career engineers in India-style hiring. Different firms weigh academics differently; product startups often care less than some campus drives. Still, when the question comes, fumbling it costs trust.

CGPA: keep the answer short

If they ask, state the number cleanly. Then one sentence on context only if it is real—illness semester, family responsibility, late branch change—not a speech blaming professors. Immediately point to what you did afterward: projects shipped, internship, open-source, contest practice, course you actually finished.

Example shape (use your facts, not this as a script): “My CGPA is X. Second year was rough because of [one true reason]. Since then I have focused on building—here is the project where I owned the API and fixed production bugs during the internship.”

Do not invent reasons. Interviewers hear fiction quickly.

Backlogs

Say whether they are cleared. If yes, say when and move on. If one is pending, say the exam date and that it does not block your availability if that is true. Long justifications make it sound bigger than it is.

Gaps (months without college or job)

Name what the gap was for in one line: health, family, failed startup attempt, skill reset, exam prep. Then show the output of that time if there was any—coursework, freelance, caregiving you can discuss respectfully without oversharing private medical detail.

“I was confused” is honest but incomplete. Add what ended the confusion: a project, a mentor, a decision to apply seriously again.

What not to do

  • Apologize five times in one answer.
  • Attack your college or compare yourself bitterly to batch toppers.
  • Claim a perfect story when the gap was messy—messy-but-owned beats polished fiction.
  • Hide a required field on an application form. That is a different problem from resume emphasis.

Put weight on evidence they can check

Marks questions fade when your project walkthrough is crisp. Practice the five-part project spine from talking about projects without rambling. Keep the resume focused on outcomes; the fresher structure in the fresher resume guide still helps even if your CGPA is not the headline.

When you apply, read JDs for degree requirements before you spend hope on a role that hard-filters marks. Listings on CareerCola link out to official pages—check eligibility there, and stay safe with job safety.

One more thing: a single awkward academics question does not define the loop. Answer, breathe, continue solving the next round.

FAQ

Should I put CGPA on the resume if it is low?
Follow what the application form asks. On a one-page resume, many candidates omit CGPA when it is not required and lead with projects and internships instead. Do not lie if a form field is mandatory.
