IT Asset Management Jobs: What ITAM and Software Asset Analysts Do

By CareerCola Editorial Team Published

IT asset management, or ITAM, is about knowing what technology a company owns, where it is, who uses it and what it costs. That covers hardware such as laptops, servers and network gear, and software licences and cloud subscriptions. It sounds dull until you see the money involved: unused licences, lost laptops and audit penalties from software vendors can be expensive.

ITAM roles sit between IT, procurement and finance. They suit people who are organised, like data, and want to work in IT without being developers.

Hardware asset management

Hardware asset work follows the lifecycle: request, purchase, receive, tag, assign, move, repair and dispose. An analyst keeps the records accurate, often in a system like ServiceNow, and runs reconciliations. If the system says 2,000 laptops and the physical count is 1,940, someone has to find out why. Disposal has its own rules, including secure data wiping and approved recyclers.

Software asset management

Software asset management (SAM) is more analytical and often better paid. The core question is: are we licensed for what we are using? Analysts collect installation and usage data, compare it with what was bought, and work out the licence position. Vendors such as Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, SAP and Adobe each have their own licensing rules, and they can be complicated. Tools such as Flexera and ServiceNow SAM help, but someone still has to interpret the results.

SAM also saves money. Removing unused licences, choosing the right subscription tier and preparing for renewals are all part of the job. Cloud cost work overlaps here; see our guide to cloud FinOps analyst roles.

Skills employers look for

  • Strong Excel and comfort with large data sets
  • Experience with an ITSM or ITAM tool (ServiceNow is the most common in listings)
  • Basic understanding of how licensing models work: per user, per device, per core, subscription
  • Working with procurement on purchase orders and vendor quotes
  • Clear written communication for audits and renewals

The ISO/IEC 19770 family of standards covers IT asset management. You do not need to memorise it, but knowing it exists is useful. Some vendors and training bodies offer ITAM certifications; check how often employers in your area mention them before paying.

Routes in

Common entry points are IT service desk, desktop support, procurement, or IT inventory roles. If you are on a service desk, ask to help with asset audits or onboarding and offboarding of equipment. That gives you real ITAM experience.

Procurement experience transfers well too, because so much ITAM work touches buying. Our procurement executive guide explains that side. This Procurement Specialist III role in Hyderabad is an example of a job that mixes IT purchasing with asset and vendor work.

What titles to search

"IT Asset Analyst", "Software Asset Management Analyst", "SAM Specialist", "ITAM Specialist", "Hardware Asset Coordinator" and "Licence Compliance Analyst". Some companies put this work inside "IT Operations Analyst" or "IT Procurement" roles, so read the descriptions.

Browse the IT and technology category on CareerCola and search with those titles. It is a steady part of IT with fewer applicants than development roles, which can work in your favour.

FAQ

Do I need coding skills for IT asset management jobs?
Usually not. Strong Excel, data handling and knowledge of an ITSM tool matter more. Some scripting or SQL helps for larger data sets, but most listings do not require it.
