Relocating for a Job in India: Tier-1 City Move Checklist and Questions to Ask

By CareerCola Editorial Team Published

An offer in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, NCR, or Chennai can change your career trajectory. It also changes rent, commute, and how lonely the first month feels. Decide with a checklist, not only brand excitement.

Money questions before you say yes

I will not quote city-wise rent averages—they go stale fast. Instead, ask people you trust currently living there, check recent listings yourself, and build a simple monthly sheet: rent + deposit impact, food, commute, and any family support you send home. Compare that to take-home pay on the offer, not CTC. Variable pay that arrives once a year does not pay July’s landlord.

Ask HR whether relocation support exists: flight, temporary housing, or a lump sum. Get it in the offer email. If the role is hybrid, ask how many office days are real versus aspirational.

Role and logistics to clarify

  • Exact office location and nearest transit—not just “Bengaluru.”
  • Shift timings or on-call expectations that affect where you can live.
  • Probation rules if you need to leave quickly because the city fit is wrong.
  • Whether remote-from-hometown for the first weeks is possible while you hunt for housing.

Remote vs office tradeoffs more broadly are covered in remote, hybrid, or office for early-career engineers; use that when the offer itself is flexible.

Housing without getting trapped

For the first month, temporary housing (PG, serviced apartment, friend’s place) beats signing a 11-month agreement sight-unseen from another city when you can avoid it. Visit neighbourhoods at commute hour if you can. Factor brokerage, deposits, and bedbugs-level practicality. Keep offer documents and ID ready for lease KYC.

Career side of the move

Moving for a clearly stronger role, mentorship, or domain can be worth discomfort. Moving only for a logo while the team is chaotic is how people burn savings. If you are comparing two cities’ offers, use the same decision lens as choosing between offers—learning and role quality sit beside rent.

Keep your search hygiene: verify the employer on official channels and stay alert to fake relocation “agents.” Job safety applies when someone offers housing help that requires upfront fees.

First 30 days on the ground

Register local practicalities (SIM, travel cards, doctor). Find one recurring social anchor—hobby group, batchmates, sports. At work, focus on ramp-up; the first 90 days advice in your first 90 days in a software job still holds when you are also learning a city.

Run the numbers, ask HR precise questions, stage the move so you are not locked into a bad lease, and treat the city as part of the job decision—not an afterthought.
